Settling in: what actually helps in the first two weeks
22 January 2026 · 5 min read

Almost every child protests at some point in the first fortnight. It is not a sign that something has gone wrong; it is a sign that your child is attached to you, which is exactly what we want.
Keep goodbyes short, warm and honest. A long, hovering exit tells a child that the situation is worth worrying about. A clear hug, a clear sentence about when you will return, and a confident walk out helps more.
Consistency beats intensity. Three short days in a row settle a child faster than one long day followed by a gap.
Bring a comfort object. A familiar cloth or small toy carries home into the room and shortens the distance between the two.
